Fall at Fort Keys by BJ Wright

8" x 10" oil on canvas covered hardboard painted en plein air, alla prima - $85 including shipping -

It seems like ages since I've been outside painting. This is the same scene - "Camp at Fort Keys" - that I painted in September at the Tunnel Hill battlefield. The foliage is changing so fast I'm glad I finally captured it on canvas. The shadows are appearing so blue and the leaves are so firey red, it's just an explosion of color.

Blue Ridge Sketches

Here are some sketches I did in the car on and around the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina last month. It's in my Canson 10x15 watercolor pad.

"The Golden Pair"

It was so windy on Friday that painting outside was a real hazard. So I painted in my car, instead! This little vignette is of a scene along Foushee Street, right near my downtown studio in Richmond, VA.

"The Golden Pair"
Oil on canvas mounted on hardboard, 5x7"

Painting in the car has its own hazards, I must say. I'm used to stepping back to see my painting from a distance, and there was none of that. It was pretty confining too, so I had to be careful where I was pointing those brushes! But, any way, I guess it beats having my painting and all my gear slamming against the pavement.

This painting is in the "Vignettes" section of my website and may be purchased online. For more info about this piece, please click on the image or contact me!

Over The Mountain - N. Rhodes Harper

Hi, I am a new contributor here. I enjoy everyone's work so much and feel it is a privilege to be invited to join. I love plein air painting and I am addicted to it. I am also an equipment junkie so later I will post my set up (or setups). This is a painting I did one afternoon in the heat of summer. A family stopped right behind me, left their car running, and sat on top of their car to watch! Just a typical day in the life of a plein air painter. If any one is interested in buying this painting, please visit my blog and let me know,,and I will set you up. 6"x 8" oil. The bidding will start on eBay for S49.99. I am not one of the troopers who battles the cold to paint in the winter so the paintings I will be posting were done this summer en plein air. Thanks and it is nice to meet everyone here!

"Autumn in Bellevue", plein air painting

Autumn landscape painting street scene

"Autumn in Bellevue"
Oil on Canvas, 7x5"

This was painted en plein air in the old Richmond, VA neighborhood of Bellevue, where I live. I have always admired this cute little yellow bungalo on our evening walks, and it fit right in with the blazing fall colors that lined the intersecting street. This has to be one of the prettiest falls I've seen in a while in the city of Richmond. Over the next days I hope to paint as many plein air paintings as I can before the wind carries the foliage away.

Daily Painting 409 The Kapok Tree Plein Air

I painted this at the Causeway Park in Fort Pierce. The seed pods from this tree are full of fluffy stuff, they used to use it to stuff life jackets and furniture cushions.
Its oil, 5 x 7 plein air, alla prima. $100.
Below is a photo I took of the flowers, I think they look very interesting.

Autumn plein air painting

“Falling Leaves on Wilmington Avenue”
Oil on Canvas, 6×8″

This is a recent autumn painting of a scene not too far from where I live in Richmond, VA. For this painting, I set my easel up just in front of a lovely row of blazing orange-red maple trees . The view looks down the street to a cross-section where it meets another road. Just at the end the street sits the suggestion of a neighboring home. All that was visible through the canopy of trees was a bit of hedge, and then beyond that a front door flanked by two columns.

Daily Painting 406 Under the Old Hickory Tree Plein Air Alla Prima

The leaves do turn color in Florida! It helps when they are back-lit by the late afternoon sun too. This is in my back yard again, under the painting is a photo of the area, a bit to the left with my dog Whisker. He was great company, barking at the neighbor's grandchildren and when he got bored with that he yapped at the squirrels in the tree I was under.

Its 4 x 6, oil, all palette knife, no brush. $100.

Queen's Mountain by Shanti Marie

queen's mountain

The last days of summer have finally gone, It took awhile but the fall colors are here. Who doesn't love the beautiful variety of color. This watercolor is really of a big hill but I named it "Queen's Mountain" because it deserves a regal name when the trees are turning this golden color.

Freedom,Plein Air Landscape by Fawn

"Freedom"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard
$97.00

After doing laundry, running errands, grocery shopping, etc . . . I started to do some yard work in the early afternoon. But I got my priorities straight this time and pulled out my easel first! It was just too perfect: nice cool breeze, bright sunshine, and a perfect view in the shade. This is the first time in 6 or 7 months that it has been cool enough to paint past noon.

I live next door to the Freedom Ranch, south of Okeechobee city, and this is one of the great views I have of their ranch. Down the long driveway you will find an open-air church among horses, cows, and dogs. Quite an interesting place.

After I did this painting I got busy and did some yard work too. Just wanted to pull a few weeds, but my husband cut down a tree, and had me hauling off branches . . . Am I glad I painted first!

From Ruck's Road, Dairy Cows, by Fawn

"From Rucks Road"
16 x 20 inches
Acrylic on canvas
$475.00

This is one of my earlier plein air paintings. I did three paintings of the dairy cows on this country road. It wasn't so bad while I did this one very early. But then the cows came up near me . . . It was smelly, had lots of flies, and I was dripping in sweat by 8:00 am! I tried to shoo them off, but they hung out next to the fence.
Needless to say, I learned to set up in the shade, and I have not gone near the dairy to paint again! LOL.

Transitions by BJ Wright

8" x 10" oil on canvas covered hardboard - painted en plein air on 9/21/07 -
This will be used as a study for a larger studio painting. The morning was unsettled and windy with patchy clouds skipping across the sky. It was as though Fall couldn't decide whether to encroach into Summer - or wait a few more weeks. There was a rustling of leaves signaling the transition of seasons. Patches of red foliage have begun peeking through the Summer green.

This scene is in the same meadow where I painted "Wisdom Oak" and "Just Saying Good Morning". I love this property located near my home in NW Georgia.

Rim Water, Sunrise Landscape, Plein Air Painting

"Rim Water"
(Lake Okeechobee)
9 x 12 inches
Acrylic on canvas

This is an older painting that I did a few years ago, I have added the egrets and a few more highlights to it. My photography is better now too, much more true to the right colors, and contrast. Of course, each monitor varies some in color too. My camera tends to through off a blue cast, so I am learning how to adjust for that and get a better image.

I am glad I painted it when I did, because this old tree was taken out and now a huge house is in it's place. Sad face here.

This is the second one I did yesterday. I may add birds to it, but I kind of like it as is. A large osprey showed up and cuaght a very large fish in front of me. He could not get out of the water and struggled for sometime near the shore. Then he let the fish go and flew off.

Inlet Park, Plein Air Florida, Alla Prima, by Fawn McNeill

"Inlet Park"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on gessoed board

Had a great morning -- worked on location out at Fort Pierce Inlet State Park. There are two sides to the park, one is on the ocean, with great beaches, the other is at the inlet, where the Indian River comes into the ocean. I enjoyed painting with the Plein Air Painters of the Treasure Coast. Lori McNamara heads up our group.

I had fun with the colors and the interesting shapes in this little piece of the inlet. This inlet is where the inter-coastal waterway meets the ocean. It makes interesting currents in the water as the salt and fresh water mix.

Radnor Lake Sketches and Farm

Here are some sketches for my Radnor Lake park paintings. The Chestnut Group is have an exhibit of it's members work to benefit the park. A whole gang of Chestnutters was out last Thursday night painting the full moon over the lake. Brave souls. I was there making pencil and marker sketches in my sketchbook. I saw lots of fine works of the moonlit lake. These were done late afternoon. I will scan my night sketches next. The farm is on Nolensville Road and Kidd Road a mile or so before you get to Nolensville TN. Attn. Locals, go paint or draw it. Small working dairy farms are vanishing fast around here.
