Lake Okeechobee. This is down by the boatramp at Lock 7. Can't even see the lake anymore. It is on the other side of all this brush. This little boat channel will take you around the brush and into the lake.

This is the same area Lori painted with me Wednesday. That was fun! You can see her post below. I love the different interpretation of it.

I toned the back ground trees down with some blues to bring out the brighter colors in the foreground. I added the birds when I got home.

I went to Lake Okeechobee, early yesterday morning and snuck in a painting before Lori came to paint with me! It was very windy and cold up on the levee, but this is one of my favorite spots. Off to the right used to be thick tall grasses and trails of marshy water. Since the whole thing was dredged and dug up it is mostly all sparse grasses. At least the water is coming back.

Daily Painting 505 Okeechobee Phragmites Plein air alla prima

I had fun today, went to Lake Okeechobee and painted with fellow Daily Painter Fawn McNeil. It was a windy day. Then I went to judge some of the paintings and other artwork for the Top of the Lake show that they are having tomorrow in the town of Okeechobee. It was a lovely selection of works, I had some hard decisions to make. Click on the picture to see it better. The painting is 8 x 10, oil, $200.

Daily Painting 504 Palms by the Indian River Plein Air Alla Prima

Its 8 x 10, oil. We had a great turnout today with my plein air group, Plein Air Painters of the Treasure Coast. About 15 of us. I had lots of fun watching the pelicans, and other birds below are some photos. I was close enough to hear their beaks clicking and see that some have blue eyes and some have brown. Daily Painting 502 Mother of Thousands Plein Air

This plant is slowly taking over our yard in spots, I like it though. Each little notch on the leaves will grow a new plant.

I did a demo under the painting, the first is a photo I took of a similar plant. You can click on the pictures to see them larger. I prepare the yupo paper, a couple of colors of watercolor are washed onto the paper, I blow on it and tilt the paper till I like the effect. I lay it flat and I let this dry overnight. Then I took a gel pen, drew the plant. The gel pen I used has ink that is not waterproof so it washes off.
The last part of the demo shows where I have wet sections of the flowers with plain water, blot with a paper towel. Then I start laying the colors in the blotted flowers and leaves.

I am enjoying doing something different other than my usual oil painting. The painting is 5 x 7 $100.

This is me at Heathcote Botanical Gardens here in Fort Pierce. I think Amy, the director there took the photo I worked from. It was real cold that day, thats why I have the heavy shirt on. Its 8 x 10, oil and not for sale.

The Southwest corner of the meadow meets a tree line at the site of the annual Battle of Tunnel Hill. Here the Yankee soldiers emerge, guns drawn and cannons blazing. It was quiet when I painted this but within an hour the site showed hundreds of Civil War reenactors.

Today's gouache experiment was interesting but I believe it is definitely a paper medium, at least for me. I struggled with this, getting any kind of contrast and values. It is very very soft on masonite so I had to overcompensate on dark values. I could not get crisp lights at all. Most everything was a midvalue range.

It does varnish nicely and looks better after varnishing. I'll have to experiment some more.

On paper it works beautifully.

I paint with a lot of different mediums amd am always looking for a good medium for location work. I did this miniature in gouache and it handles very nicely with good detail, true color, no darkening like acrylic, and no bad smell like casein. I was impressed with it for all of the above reasons. An easy medium for plein air work. Sorry this is blurry. It is so small, it was hard to photograph.

Went back to lock G-36 yesterday (which is still closed due to lack of water). It was cool and breezy in the morning, and I wanted to capture the cool, blueish shadows in the rocks. The egrets were all around, so I added one here on the shore.

The water in the rim canal around the levee is getting very full. The water in the lake is still very low. They are not opening up the locks and letting the water flow because all of the canals and creeks will stay too low. I guess they figure people can at least get their boats in the water this way.

It is sad to see what was once a grand wetland with tons of wildlife shrink away to dry land. Lake Okeechobee seems to be disappearing.

Daily Painting 485 Flowers in a Pot Rock City Gardens Plein Air Alla Prima

I painted this at Rock City Gardens in Sebastian. There were a whole lot of flowers in this pot, geraniums, petunias, plumbago, the little pink flowers and the dark blue ones I don't know the names of. It was one of those fun ones to paint. I painted this from a live model and I wanted to share, not sure if you consider it plein Air, but it was very cold in the our industrial building we meet in and almost like being outside. Watercolor on gessoed paper. 5 inches by 5 inches.

I've been asked to do a few paintings of the river for a future exhibition. I always like to do several studies before I start a large painting. I like to get to know the scene and the image I will be using. Exploring north Florida rivers in the winter is a wonderful experience. No bugs!! I took some photos while I was there to do this painting and the large paintings will be done from my photos in the studio.

Daily Painting 484 Calamondin Orange Tree at Heathcote Botanical Gardens Plein Air

This is a cool tree at Heathcote, it has tiny, tart little oranges smaller than golf balls. There were more oranges on the ground than on the tree, I thought they looked interesting and I had to try to paint them. Below is my photo, Allie the head gardener took my picture. It started out pretty chilly, I have lots of layers of clothes. She let me have some of their pretty oxalis, thats whats in the cup. The painting is 8 x 10 and not available right now.

Haven't been out on location in quite a while. I know there is probably a neat name for this area of the levee, but the sign just says G-36. The lock in this area is still closed, the lake is still too low. The canals and creeks are filling up, but not the lake.

It was too windy today so I only did one painting, then I packed up. At one point the painting actually blew off of the easel and onto the palette! No harm done, it missed the blobs of paint, just scratched it a little and I touched it up.

This is a palette knife painting, lots of thick paint and lovely texture.
