Stole an hour at sunset. Rarely do I get to paint on location in the evening. In fact this is the first one I have done outside at sunset! The colors were so vibrant, I really didn't do it justice. But it felt good to get out there!

This is at Nubbin's Slough. The water is coming up some, but there is still a lot of land where it used to be all under water. It has been about a year and a half now that Lake Okeechobee has been so low. I added the birds when I got home.

Near the End of the Cotee River by Jenna Star

Painted en plein air recently with my friends of the West Coast Plein Air group. A couple of months ago, we discovered the James Grey Preserve right here in the middle of New Port Richey, FL. We've made many painting expeditions here and will continue to do so, because of the astounding beauty. This is where the Pithlaschacotee River ends. The river is tidal as it goes out to the Gulf of Mexico, so there are low and high water levels every day. The birds and vegetation here are varied and numerous. I did this on one of the first times we went there in February, and there were flocks of hundreds of robins flying and nesting overhead. So this is where they spend their winters, just like all the other (human) snowbirds that populate Florida in the cold months. I just wonder why would they ever want to leave?

along the path

I painted this on gessoed masonite. It's 4 inches by 4 inches and may be framed with or with out glass. I love old tree stumps and find them everywhere I go. The wood always seems to have a wonderful pattern of rings. Combined with the aging process the wood also has an interesting texture. I think I could do a series just on tree bark. I have walked thru the woods here in SC and studied the trees. One can find an endless variety of colors patterns and textures. I'm sure someone already has done a series on tree bark, its just too good of a subject to be ignored.

Mini Art Lesson

How to prepare your surface... First..buy acrylic gesso. Next paint the gesso on paper, wood, canvas or illustration board. You can put texture into it or paint it on thin and smooth. To make texture you can use household objects, your fingers or just a bristle brush. To make it smooth, use a low nap roller, sponge brush or a spatula.

Let the gesso dry to a pretty hard surface, this depends on the weather. You can also put your piece on the oven door with a low oven turned on to speed up the process. It really should be dry within an hour if applied thin to medium. If applied thickly you may want to allow it to dry overnight. When you paint on gesso it is important to remember gesso can be reconstituted so you don't want to scrubb the gesso too hard since you can actually take it off, this doesn't look good and can actually create a hole in your painting. Remember...this takes a light touch. If you do rub it off just repaint the gesso back over the area allow to dry and repaint. I have scubbed back to white many times without a problem but be aware of the thickness of the gesso to avoid taking it down to the wood or whatever support your using. Watercolor does not sink into the gesso like paper so the color will be very much the same wet or dry. Glazing is tricky, you can only really paint one glaze on at a time because repeated brush strokes while wet will take off the lst layer. If you put too much water and scrubb too hard with your brush you will reconstitute the paint and get an opacity you may not want, pull off the color with a tissue let dry for a minute and repaint. The beauty of this type of watercolor... is you can paint and repaint. If you make a mistake, you can have a do over. Of course...don't we all want a do over?

Have fun with this, its great for painters of all ages but kids do particularly well with this and you can teach watercolor to kids very easily .

As we were painting at the Tunnel Hill battlefield on March 22nd, I saw this lovely patch of purple at the meadow's edge. As I painted, the dark colors under the trees on the left kept changing. Even though my initial intent was to feature the purple flowers, I loved working on the darks as well.

First Plein Air Day Out to Paint

The look on my face explains it all....how happy to be outside painting. I thought winter would last forever. This was the second attempt that day. I stayed after BJ, Tim, and Sherry left to finish it up. We were painting at the Tunnel Hill Civil War Re enactment site and BJ was telling us stories of General's legs that didn't get buried with the body. Come join us!

Oscar's House; morning plein air

The weather has warmed up this week, but the strange wind gusts prevail. I sat pondering this over morning coffee, trying to decide where I might go to paint outside without being completely blown away. I had only packed my smaller lightweight pochade box, which as I've described previously in excruciating detail, is not great for wind. But the other alternative was to drive across town to my studio to get my larger, sturdier easel. As I turned these matters over in my head, I stared out the kitchen window, and this scene came into view:

I started noticing how the forsythia bush in our yard (foreground lower left) framed and echoed the bushes in bloom across the street at my neighbor's house. I also noticed how the bare-limbed trees above created a kind of upper frame for the little bungalow, and I thought the composition could be worth exploring. Also, since I could set up on my back porch, I'd be sheltered from the wind by our house. Whether this solution was realized out of laziness or resourcefulness is a matter of opinion, but never-the-less, "Oscar's House" was born!

I think I'm going to be kind to myself today and call it a resourceful solution to a rather gusty March morning. For more information about this painting, please contact me.

I belong to a plein air group called OOPS... Onslow Outdoor Painters Society. We gather once a month at "Paint Outs"... this painting is from our February paint out. An exercise in painting in the WIND along the intra-coastal waterway.

Hugo's Tire Shop (oil 5x7) $100

I always pass this tire shop on Murfreesboro Road in Nashville when I head to Hill's Grocery after I leave my office. I keep thinking it would make a cool painting so I finally did one! I slammed the color down fast and hard. Murfreesboro is an interesting drive into Nashville. Plenty of colorful Latino shops and restaurants ready to do business. (Pardon the glare. Still a little wet. I will scan it when dry.)

Cherry Blossom Debut by Shanti Marie

I love the few months in SC that the plum, cherry and peach trees bloom because its a fleeting dash of color set against the almost grey green and browns of the winter months.

The only problem I can see with this is the short time one has to enjoy their beauty. Having a painting can remind me of the wonderful feel of a breeze blowing thru the limbs and the small pink blossoms ooking like snow as they float to the ground.

This oil painting was done mostly in plein air at the beach in Tarpon Springs and I finished it up recently in the studio. The view is looking west toward Anclote Key in the Gulf of Mexico. This beach is a local gem, one of many I've discovered since moving to Florida a couple of years ago.

Springtime at the Hill- Jennifer Young

You might be thinking, "That's not much of a hill". But the "Hill" I'm referring to in this painting is the A.P. Hill monument on Hermitage Road in Richmond's North Side neighborhood.

Painted on location yesterday afternoon, I started this at about 2 PM under warm, sunny skies. But it sure got chilly pretty quickly once the clouds started rolling in. I pass by this gentleman every day as I drive to and from home, but I think he's at his most charming in the springtime as he gazes down at the row of flowering trees.

An interesting footnote that I didn't realize, but according to Wikipedia:

"This monument is the only one of its type in Richmond under which the subject individual is actually interred."

Daily Painting 525 Round Island Park Sea Grape Plein Air Alla Prima

I did this today on the river side of Round Island Park, last Tuesday and Wednesday were on the ocean side of it. Thats a sea grape tree on the left, very pretty now with new orange leaves and old red ones at the same time. I saw three manatees today. The painting is 8 x 10, oil, $200.

Got to go out to J and S Fish Camp in the evening yesterday. The rim canal is off to the right and Lake Okeechobee is over the levee. I saw this little muddy path with the palms and thought how perfect of a composition that it would make! I used a simple palette with very few colors to give it more harmony.

3rd & Chestnut (pencil)

This is 3rd & Chestnut in Nashville TN off Murfreesboro Road. That house midway back is a nice light blue green with the sun on it. I may paint this one. I used a big fat ass pencil and worked fast in my sketchbook.

Its 8 x 10 oil, it was a lovely, breezy morning. I had the painting all finished, I was taking it off the easel to sign it and the wind caught it and it landed on my palette full of paint. It looked awful, I didn't know if I could fix it or not. There was a dime-sized blob of pthalo blue paint in the sky and various smears and other blobs. I was able to fix it up all right as you can see.

Daily Painting 511 Palms and Mangroves Plein Air Alla Prima

Its 8 x 10, oil, I did this in Vero today with my plein air group, the Plein Air Painters of the Treasure Coast. $200.
We had a nice turnout, at least 14 of us were there. After I painted my husband and I stopped at a new (to us anyhow) observation deck on A1A. Its a short walk to the river. On the way we saw the wild bobcat below the painting, its the first time I have been able to photograph a wild one, seen a few but never with a camera handy. It was a thrill! He didn't stay long, he was very pretty with nice spots. I am guessing he was about 40 pounds, much bigger than a house cat.

Paintings from Florida- Selby Gardens

I enjoyed painting in Sarasota during January with several artist friends. This painting was done one morning outside the gates of the Selby Botanical Gardens. I think the house is used for an office now for the Gardens. When we arrived, the fog was really heavy. Setting up in the parking lot, we blocked in the main shapes and painted the sky a light gray. As soon as the fog lifted, we punched up the colors where the sun was hitting. Lots of fun! This painting is 12 x 16 oil on panel. Industrial Building Sketch

This is out in Altamont TN. I don't know what it was but it needed to be drawn. I have it redrawn on a panel ready for acrylic. I thought about going in for a looksee but it looked scary.

This is the first time I've used the mat board for gouache and I like it really well. My framer gives me tons of little scraps, so why not? The matboard holds the paint up, so it doesn't sink into the paper the way it does on watercolor. It gives the gouache a nice crisp edgework and clean color.

Would you believe we are in bloom up here in north Florida? There is wild plum, and redbud blooming as well as these crazy blue flowered weeds that grow everywhere up here. The odd thing is that it has been quite cold with light frost this week but the blooms are here.

Plein Air Paintings Showing at Reflections Gallery

 
Sandra Babb has three paintings exhibited in the Reflections Gallery on Lee Highway, Chattanooga, TN. The one on the top and the lower one are plein air paintings done on site. The middle one is a pastel from photo because she is not allowed to live in Monet's garden, unfortunately. Fond remembrances are held of painting plein air while there and hopefully some of that freshness is in this pastel.
