Before the Rain, landscpae with bald eagle

"Before the Rain"

About This Painting:
Plein air painting, Lori McNamara and I got rained out. Some of the painting was distorted slightly, but most of it held up with the rain water all over it. I repainted parts of it and also finished it at home. The eagle was off to the right of this area. Lori got a great picture of him (see below). I moved him to the left so I could include him in my painting.

Ready to frame.
Media: acrylic on hardboard
Size: 6 in X 6 in (15.2 cm X 15.2 cm)
Price: $100 USD

Daily Painting 1051 Rained out in the Savannas! Plein Air Alla Prima

Went out today and the sky looked pretty much like the painting when I got there but that big cloud in the background got closer and closer and pretty soon it began pouring. I took some photos too, the first one you can see the drops and the dead tree in the distance with a bird on it. I zoomed in on the bird and when I got home I saw it was a bald eagle!

I just checked the painting, it survived fine, the rain drops on it are all dried up. I was under a pavilion with fellow Daily Painter Fawn McNeil it was nice painting with her even though it was raining. The painting is 8 x 10 oil, on masonite $300.

Slip, Slop and Slap

I just read a wonderful reminder from...get this...my insurance company. The leaflet suggests that anyone venturing outdoors should "Slip, Slop and Slap".

...that would mean Slip on a shirt, Slop on sunscreen and Slap on a hat. Sounds like good advice for us plein air painters.

15 Minute Sunrise # 274

Painted 2/16/2010 from my studio window - too cold and a bit old to sit outside these days. We still had snow with much more on the way. The sun this morning was in it's cadmium orange stage when I first noticed it, a nice change from the normal cadmium yellow I get to see most of the winter. I also see it a bit earlier because its moving from behind the trees. I quickly set up, but missed this particular stage. I thought you might like to see what I did get.

Dawn - study #221

Painted from life 1/16/2010
This morning the sky was this wonderful coral and blue, still somewhat dark I made it my warm up study for the day. I used Cobalt Blue in place of my normal French Ultramarine and Holbein's Scarlet Lake for the suns glow

December Snow 2 # 188

10x8 Oil on lined panel - painted from life 12/21/09 started 7:30 AM completed 8:30 AM.
We had a great snow fall here, great because we didn't lose heat or power this time. It also stayed cold with sunny days since it stopped. We still have tons of snow. Great to study the snow and it's colour palette. I added Burnt sienna back in, works especially well with French Ultramarine. I did a number of panels over the last days, mostly of the sun.

A Fabulous Friday in Fall by BJ Wright

8"x10" oil on RayMar panel, painted en plein air, alla prima, on November 13th (completed at 11:20am)...$85 including shipping. In trying several different painting ideas, I had pre-toned some canvas panels using alizarin crimson, cad yellow and ultramarine blue --- brushing the thinned paint on in a somewhat planned but otherwise haphazard way. Letting the toned canvas peek through serves to unite the painting. The pear trees, with their red foliage, contrasted with the evergreens nearby. As noontime approached, shadows were quickly disappearing. Although it appears that black paint was used, it was actually a mixture of ultramarine blue and burnt umber. I am trying to use my watercolors more for plein air studies. Went to White City Park on Tuesday morning. It was lovely out, birds everywhere, and flowers blooming in all the ponds. This lily had just started to open up when I got there. By the noon hour it had completely unfolded, and the petals were even hanging down in the water!

Ready to frame.

Daily Painting 970 Beautiful Day at White City Park

Its oil plein air, alla prima. I painted it at the park today, really pretty out. The big white egret was in the bottle brush tree for most of the painting. Little birds were singing in the oak tree that I was sitting under and pooping on my palette. ( I had the painting tipped a bit so it was safe.) Its 8 x 10 inches, $300.
