Daily Painting 1463 Approaching Storm

I went out to paint when the edge of Sandy was going by, it was just windy.  Had a nice walk on the beach too.
I like to start off with a fast sketch before I do the painting to warm up and catch any compositional problems.  The wind was blowing strong and it looked like rain so I parked under a pavilion at Fredrick Douglas park on the beach.  I got my sketch finished and the rain started coming down, well not down really more like across, it was blowing pretty horizontal.  Got soaked on the way to the car which was about 20 feet away.
Last night I pulled out my sketch and made the painting below from it, its 8 x 10 inches, oil on masonite. $200.

Painting at the Old Fort Park

I went painting today, finally, I have been in a horrible funk, just not in the mood to paint.  Went to the Old Fort Park in Ft. Pierce to paint, it was beautiful out.  The painting below wasn't done today though, it was done back in May, there was the annual Souvenirs of Downtown paintout and for some reason I never got around to posting this painting.  I think I did the painting and was tired out, dropped it off at the show and that was that.  And now it is at another show at the Art Bank.

I wanted to post it because the palm tree was blown down in Sandy.  My painting shows it still standing and then I took a photo of it today.   It is still alive and may survive, I know they sometimes do.

I did do another painting today, I'll post it tomorrow.

I did this from life awhile ago, didn't like it so I got it back out and scraped off the offending parts and re-painted a bit.  There was this building in the background with two windows, it kind of looked like eyes looming out of the painting at you. I like it so much better without the house. Its from the Old Fort Park site.   Its 4 x 6 inches, oil on masonite, $100.

1402 Coconut Palms Pondside Plein air Alla Prima

I went to Immokolee today for the Art Mundo paintout. Immokolee  is a historic home here in Fort Pierce.  Its a lovely home and yard, a great place to paint.  I had a good time, there is lots of nice things to paint there.
This is a pretty pond they have, its surrounded by giant ferns and these plants with small bright red flowers whose name escapes me.  The butterflies love them and I saw a lot of giant swallowtails and zebra butterflies.
Art Mundo provided nice cold soft drinks and water and the owners of Immokolee gave us some donuts, I couldn't ask for anything more.

The painting is 5 x 7, oil on masonite.  $100.

Daily Painting 1400 Green House on Ave. D. Plein Air

I did this at the Souvenirs of Downtown Fort Pierce paintout so its not available right now.  It was fun to paint, I was sitting across the street with a friend of mine in a yard with no trespassing signs on it.   It looked like it was going to pour down rain too.  So we painted fast, figuring we would either get run off or rained on.  The rain blew over, one drop only landed on me and nobody made us leave.

Its 8 x 10,inches  oil on masonite.

Daily 1397 Tabebuia Tree by the Backus House

This is unavailable at the moment, its one of the paintings I did at the Backus House Souvenirs of Downtown paintout.  I had a wonderful time, it was wonderful visiting with everyone.  We got treated beautifully, got three meals every day!  The first dinner was just for the artists, that was really nice.  Then there were two nice receptions, during the big one there was a big rain storm so there weren't as many people coming out, mainly artists and their friends and families.

The painting is 8 x 10, oil on masonite.  There is a yellow tabebuia tree next to the Backus house and in the back is the melon colored cottage.

I did six other paintings over the three days,  I was pretty happy with most of them.

Daily Painting 1375 In for the Day Blue sailboat plein air alla prima

I did this today by the marina in Fort Pierce, changed the background to a more natural area instead of the parking lot and cars and other boats, buildings, etc. It was a beautiful day, had lots of nice company, other artists and nice people who liked my painting. (even when it was a lot of blobs) Saw a family of manatees and a few pods of dolphins. The painting is 5 x 7 inches, oil on masonite, $100.

Daily Painting 1374 Manatee Center, Fort Pierce, Plein Air Alla Prima

I painted this today looking towards the Manatee Center here in Ft. Pierce, it was perfect out and I had lots of good company. Even saw three manatees!
Had a some people stand right in front of what I was trying to paint, I wonder how other artists deal with that, I thought what I should have said was, "If you all don't move I will paint you into the picture!"
Its 8 x 10, oil on masonite, $200.

Daily Painting 1368 Pepper Park Lane Plein Air Alla Prima

I did this at Pepper Park here in Fort Pierce. I took some artistic liberties, made the asphalt into a dirt road. Other than that its pretty close to what is there. If you look into the distance you can see you can take a left, that will lead you out of the park and if you take a right you get to where you can go walk on some nice docks. Its 8 x 10 inches, oil on masonite. $200.

Daily Painting 1365 Seagrape Splendor Plein air Alla Prima at Pepper Park

I painted this today at Pepper Park. This is on the Indian River side of the park. I started walking around on the ocean side, it was beautiful and I saw a lot of nice scenes to paint but it was very bright out with no shade where I would have to be.
I did some editing of the scene, in real life there is a dark black asphalt drive where the sandy trail is. I also left out the trash can and dock. The sea grapes are gorgeous right now, bright red and orange, each leaf is a work of art if you zoom your sight in. It feels so much like fall now, our hickory trees are golden and there are red Virginia creeper vines all over.
The painting is 8 x 10 inches, oil on masonite.

Daily Painting 1363 The Bismark Palm at Heathcote Botanical Gardens

I painted this today at Heathcote Botanical Gardens here in Fort Pierce. I have painted this palm before, it has grown a lot taller since I have been painting it. The fronds have changed colors too, when it was young they were a silvery gray. I took some liberties with the background, there are some white walls I didn't care for so I got rid of them. The painting is 8 x 10 inches, oil on masonite. No brush used at all, its all the pallet knife and some blending with my fingers. $200.

Daily Painting 1359 Winter in Heathcote Botanical Gardens Plein Air Alla Prima

Perfect day today, the main difficulty I had was there is so much to choose from to paint! Those are impatiens in the flower pot and some kind of begonia with huge leaves next to it. In the back is the bauhinia orchid tree which is in bloom too. The bright pink plant is a dracaena.

The painting is in oil, nice thick texture. Its 8 x 10 inches, $200.

Daily Painting 1356 Indian River Live Oaks Plein Air Alla Prima

I painted this at the site of the original old fort that Fort Pierce is named after. There is a little park there on Indian River Drive and its a nice place to paint. Someday before I get too old and decrepit I have to work out a small plein air set up so I can climb down the river bank and paint from there, its really pretty down at the shore. The painting is oil on masonite, 12 x 16 inches,
