Getting Away from the Green by BJ Wright

Painting in Northwest Georgia in the Spring and Summer presents particular challanges when dealing with greens. An artist friend describes the foliage here as being "North Georgia Green Green". It takes keen observation to find those hidden 'other' colors in the thick leafy trees.

This scene is actually a gravel road running along the Western edge of Chetoogeta Mountain in Tunnel Hill, GA. I just didn't use any green - of any kind, either mixed or tube color - when painting this quick study. Afterward I did another painting using a 'normal' palette of Spring colors. I'll post it soon.

This little church is in Tunnel Hill, GA. There are buildings around the church but I chose to leave them out of the painting. The church has been there for probably 100 years or more.

As we were painting at the Tunnel Hill battlefield on March 22nd, I saw this lovely patch of purple at the meadow's edge. As I painted, the dark colors under the trees on the left kept changing. Even though my initial intent was to feature the purple flowers, I loved working on the darks as well.

This small building is directly across the street from the Heritage Center. The pear trees are in full bloom and are amazing in all their colors of white.

This little gravel road runs south at the foot of Chetoogeta Mountain from the old general store, past Fort Keys then exits back into the 21st century on US Highway 41. It is the 'road in' when the Civil War reenactors arrive for the Battle of Tunnel Hill.

Chetoogeta Hillside by BJ Wright

This scene was painted in 3 stages. Beginning in April the general layout was done; then twice the site was revisited with additions and corrections made to include the seasonal changes. The final touches were done in studio on August 20th.

There are actually two tunnels through Chetoogeta Mountain. The one on the right is famous for being part of the Great Locomotive Chase during the Civil War, and is now part of the historical park in Tunnel Hill. The tunnel to the left was opened in 1928 to accommodate the larger locomotive engines of modern times.

Chetoogeta Hillside by BJ Wright

This painting was started on April 27th (see April 29th post) but has been sitting in my studio. Several days ago I returned to the hillside and worked some more. Keep in mind that April and August have widely differing weather, lighting, vegetation, etc. It still isn't completed so I will return to the site once more to complete this painting. Wednesday morning was hazy and overcast; the sun just wasn't showing through the clouds. I chose to paint this clump of trees at the meadow's edge. There just wasn't anything special about the scene and I was becoming disappointed at the outcome. But just as I was completing the foreground, the sun peeked through and the Queen Anne's lace seemed to spring up shouting "Look at us!". I smiled and instantly knew the title of this little painting.
