Just thought I would post a few of the paintings from my painting workshop in France this month. Even though we had quite a bit of rain, I was able to squeeze in some painting time between giving demos and leading the workshop. We had a wonderful time! These paintings sold at our open house the last night in Fountaine-Fourches. I also sold two more, so really didn't have much to bring home! Looking forward to the next French adventure in 2009 in the French Alps! Winter on the James

This is a view of the James River painted on location at the Hollywood Cemetery in my town, Richmond, Virginia:

I actually love old cemeteries any way, but the Hollywood Cemetery is one of Richmond's landmarks and a major tourist attraction in our town. Not only is it the burial place of two presidents and several prominent figures in civil war history, but it is also incredibly beautiful.

The day started out as a nice, sunny, and unusually warm winter day. But shortly after I got there, I soon found that my "perfect" spot on a bluff overlooking the James River had the disadvantage of getting whipped into a frenzy by the wind! I really did have to cut this session short. I think the piece may need a little more work, but I will return on a better day.

As it was, by the time I packed up my gear, I looked like I had been attacked by a giant tube of Windsor green paint! (Ah, the joys of plein air painting!) Any way, I am just glad nobody saw my little Jerry Lewis plein air routine. Well, maybe some ghosts saw, but (at least today), they weren't talking. ;-)

"Autumn in Bellevue", plein air painting

"Autumn in Bellevue"

This was painted en plein air in the old Richmond, VA neighborhood of Bellevue, where I live. I have always admired this cute little yellow bungalo on our evening walks, and it fit right in with the blazing fall colors that lined the intersecting street. This has to be one of the prettiest falls I've seen in a while in the city of Richmond. Over the next days I hope to paint as many plein air paintings as I can before the wind carries the foliage away.

Autumn plein air painting

“Falling Leaves on Wilmington Avenue”

This is a recent autumn painting of a scene not too far from where I live in Richmond, VA. For this painting, I set my easel up just in front of a lovely row of blazing orange-red maple trees . The view looks down the street to a cross-section where it meets another road. Just at the end the street sits the suggestion of a neighboring home. All that was visible through the canopy of trees was a bit of hedge, and then beyond that a front door flanked by two columns.

A Sweet William Morning by BJ Wright

Doing the Morning Dance by BJ Wright

This row of trees lines the end of our driveway. As the morning sun rises, the light strikes them in animation. This is my narrative of the dance.

The couple on the left - she's not sure of him, he's a little pushy, and besides his hair is too long.
He doesn't know it, but the chaperone is looking over his shoulder.

Meanwhile the couple in the middle - seem to be getting along just fine and making time.

The lone fellow on the right is the wallflower. He let too much grass grow under his feet. He won't have a date at this dance.

Colors at the Crossing by BJ Wright ---- SOLD

Painting structures in the studio with the help of a T-square, plotted vanishing points, etc usually doesn't pose a problem. However, I'm trying to stretch my painting abilities by painting these structures free hand and en plein air - winging it.

This painting features the historic buildings around the Tunnel Hill, GA, railroad crossing (hidden to the left). On the left in the forefront is the Tunnel Hill Historical Center. Then behind it (L to R) are the Tunnel Hill Church of Christ and the depot (made famous during the Great Locomotive Chase during the Civil War). The orange building was originally Griffin's Sundries - Toppie made the best hamburgers in the state and was always there with her Southern lady charm. The red building was the Tunnel Hill Baptist Mission, but in later years housed Playhouse 64 and featured well known country singers in concert. The two buildings to the right are small factories.

You might not have noticed, but I left out power lines which are such a distraction to the charm of this beautiful spot in NW Georgia. I love it here!

Wednesday morning was hazy and overcast; the sun just wasn't showing through the clouds. I chose to paint this clump of trees at the meadow's edge. There just wasn't anything special about the scene and I was becoming disappointed at the outcome. But just as I was completing the foreground, the sun peeked through and the Queen Anne's lace seemed to spring up shouting "Look at us!". I smiled and instantly knew the title of this little painting.

Early Before the Rain by BJ Wright

I parked at the little covered bridge in Tunnel Hill. I was unloading my painting equipment just before 7 am, searching for a colorful dawn sky. The clouds were moving fast and I saw the pinks appearing as I had hoped. Getting the sky onto canvas was my first thought. I could do the meadow and trees afterward. As the sun peeked from behind the clouds, I was seeing orange, violet, reds - wonderful colors in the trees and underbrush.

The sun suddenly spotlighted the tree on the left with all its crooked limbs and beautiful bark. Just as I finished painting and packing away, the first rain drops fell. It was truly a beautiful morning in Tunnel Hill, GA.

Red Clay Council House study by BJ Wright

This is a study of the Cherokee council house located at Red Clay Park in Cleveland, TN. The day was overcast with very brief moments of sun. The colors appeared to be muted and all the greens seemed to run together. I painted what I saw, but from the start I could see that the lighting left a lot to be desired. I do intent to return later, possibly taking this study. I was intrigued by the large tree on the left which appears to be pointing towards the council house. There is an annual powwow held at the park on the first weekend in August - this year being on the 4th and 5th. Everyone is welcome.

Slow Summer Stream - Sandra Babb

Sandra painted this scene in Griffin Park in Tunnel Hill, GA, on June 12th - the same day I painted "Creekside Red" (posted on 6-25-07). We set up our easels several yards apart and painted until the heat and bugs got us. If you'll look at both posts, you'll see the same scene being interpreted differently by each of us. Sandra drove her red Jeep down the old dirt road to the back pastures of her farm. The cows watched curiously as we set up our easels. It was early and we were trying to miss the July heat. Being overcast, the day blessed us with cool breezes and shade from the old trees. The little pond was covered with scum which was a wonderful shade of blue/breen - almost impossible to match with paint pigments.

Flavors of the South by BJ Wright

While mixing the paints for this one, I was musing about the delicious colors of this early morning scene. The sunlight hitting the second story porch was a wonderful orange sherbet or

peach iced tea. The deep red shadow side was raspberry jam or perhaps plum butter. The darkest shadows were licorice and the new grass was limeade. Mint julep anyone??

Pigeon Mountain Lake by BJ Wright

On Wednesday, Sandra and I thought we had gotten an early start to miss the heat as we drove through Chickamauga and toward Pigeon Mountain. We were wrong. After finally finding a spot wide enough to pull off the dirt road, not get into the poison oak and not fall off the mountain - we set up our easels. About the time we uncovered our palettes, there came a dump truck "high-ballin' it" followed by a cloud of dust. Then about every 5 minutes another truck came by, then another, then another. It is interesting to note that each time a truck went by, they were driving slower and slower. We think that maybe they were on their radios telling each other, "Hey guys, there's a couple of crazy ladies on the side of the road trying to paint in this heat. Let's give 'em a break." Afterwards we had a nice lunch in Chickamauga and planned another outing soon. Plein air painting - you gotta love it!

This little shack sits on the edge of the meadow where the annual Civil War reenactment is held in Tunnel Hill, GA. It's used mostly for storage now, but it comes alive during the battle with horses tied to the hitching rail and Yankee soldiers on the porch awaiting orders.

Creekside Red by BJ Wright - SOLD

This little creek is in Harry Griffin Park in Tunnel Hill, GA. Painting that day was a chore because of the heat and fatigue - we had been painting for several hours. I've been trying to practice "paint what you see, not what you think you see". The water flow in the little creek is low due to the drought, so the dark vegetation shows through the crystal clear water, almost making the water disappear. As I was finishing the last strokes, I noticed a red object in the lower right. I painted it, too, not thinking what it might be. Then I began noticing red in the shadows to the left. I painted it also. Walking into the water, I found the red object on the right (a Coke can) and realized that the can's color had drawn my eye to the otherwise unrelated reds in the shadows. Painting shapes and colors helps me realize the characteristics of the objects they become.

On June 12th, Sandra, Cathy and I met to paint at a nearby park which is the location of the annual Battle of Tunnel Hill, a Civil War reenactment. It was still early, but we knew we must capture the light and shadow before it got too hot. I did 2 more paintings that day and will post them soon. I had done another painting at this same site on April 30th (posted on May 5th) and the difference in the foliage is amazing. If I painted this same scene every day of the year, I wouldn't be tired of it.

The trees are still showing the effects of the late hard frost here in N. Georgia. But the grasses are blooming and the clover smells sweet. There's just so much color in this meadow and in the trees beyond! There aren't the proper pigments on a palette to express Nature's beauty this Spring.
