Paintings from France

Paintings from France:

Gravon Cottage, oil on panel, 9 x 12 (sold)

La Porte, oil on multi-media board, 10 x 8 (sold)

Terrace Roses, oil on panel, 9 x 12 (sold)

Just thought I would post a few of the paintings from my painting workshop in France this month. Even though we had quite a bit of rain, I was able to squeeze in some painting time between giving demos and leading the workshop. We had a wonderful time! These paintings sold at our open house the last night in Fountaine-Fourches. I also sold two more, so really didn't have much to bring home! Looking forward to the next French adventure in 2009 in the French Alps! Email me if you are interested in seeing more French paintings, commissioning a painting, or going on a painting workshop with me: Durindacheek@gmail.com

The Tree by BJ Wright

8" x 10" oil on canvas panel, painted en plein air, alla prima, on May 19th - $85 including shipping - I've painted this old oak tree several times, but this particular day was a playfully magic time. The tree seemed to paint itself and I love the 'cartoony' quality. Originally I had thought to use this as an underpainting and return to the site to 'finish' the work. But each time I pick up the painting, it seems complete in its own special way.

Blackberry Morning by BJ Wright

10" x 8" oil on linen board, painted en plein air, alla prima, on May 19th (completed at 10:15 am) - $85 including shipping -
It was a crazy morning trying to catch the colors as the sun raced across the sky. The sky was at first cloudless, then hazy, then sunfulled - everything was changing so quickly as I painted fast and tried to keep up. The shadows seemed to be playing 'peek-a-boo' as they changed colors endlessly. The only thing unchanging was the clump of blooming blackberries in the foreground.

Sandra painting in Chickamauga Battlefield Park

Sandra, her student Carol and BJ painted in Chickamauga Battlefield Park on Monday, June 16th. It was cool on the shaded side of the mountain and we saw lots of people walking, biking and horseback riding. As I was ready to photograph Sandra's painting, it seemed to melt into the scenery! It was wonderful the way Sandra had perfectly matched the green pigments to the ones Mother Nature had chosen.

Wilson County Barn (watercolor 12x16) $110

This is near Statesville Tennessee in Wilson County. This barn has seen better days. The little pig watched me for a while. The cows in the area were mooing at me. Probably thought I had some hay for them. Been a while since I have posted.

Daily Painting 616 Pot of Flowers at Heathcote Botanical Gardens Miniature Plein Air Alla Prima

I painted this at Heathcote Botanical Gardens. Its plein air, alla prima, miniature, all painting knife. 4 x 6 inches. I don't think there are many paintings this small that are painted only with a knife. It was a lot of fun, one of those paintings that kind of paint themselves. Below is a detail so you can see all the texture. If you click on the pictures you will see them much bigger than life.

Sandra's paintings at "A Brush with History" show

Both these were painted by Sandra and are featured in the "A Brush with History" show at the Tunnel Hill Heritage Center. The top one features a faded red caboose which is very popular with children who visit the park. The bottom one is of a dead tree snag. Behind and to the right you can just make out the Hillcrest Church of Christ which was built in the 1890's.

Going the Long Way Home by BJ Wright

8"x10" oil, painted en plein air, alla prima -
Sandra and I painted in the late afternoon, looking East toward Chetogeeta Mountain. This road leads up toward homes built along the ridge. It reminds me of taking little detours along life's road, seeing what might be around the next bend.

This has been entered in the Creative Arts Guild's Festival Gallery show in September. I hope it sells - but if not, I will post it again here after the exhibit ends.

Faded Red Caboose

Recently I painted with BJ down at the Tunnel Hill Heritage Park. This little car is sitting along fading in the sun. The sun was getting low and I liked the way it played on the side of this "red" car. I'm putting it in the Tunnel Hill Art Show the Civic Art League is hanging on Monday. It was wet when I took it in to Reflections to be framed by one of our club members. He is that good that I'm picking it up on Monday right before taking it to the show....close!

Daily Painting 612 Palm Meeting at Round Island Beach Plein Air Alla Prima

This was one of those fun ones, everything flows, it almost paints itself. I was at Round Island Park. I turned my back on the ocean and saw this group of palms, they all looked like they were leaning together in deep conversation. Most times I have seen trees bending away from each other to get the best light.

Its oil, 5 x 7, all painting knife, lots of nice chunky texture. Click on it to see it better.

North for the Summer by BJ Wright

5" x 7" oil on canvas panel, painted en plein air, alla prima on May 28th around 7:30 am - $40 (painting only) - $55 (painting framed as shown).....contact me for purchase.....

Painting in the field early in the morning has its rewards. Just as I was putting my signature into the wet paint, I heard the geese honking overhead as they flew North for the Summer. While packing my painting equipment into the car, I also spotted a white tail deer loping through the tall meadow grass. What a wonderful morning for painting!

Daily Painting 608 Judy at Round Island Plein Air Alla Prima

Its oil, painting knife, 6 x 8. It was a lovely breezy day at the beach at Round Island, as long as I was in the shade it wasn't too hot. This is Judy, one of the members of my painting group, the Plein Air Painters of the Treasure Coast. $150.

Getting Away from the Green by BJ Wright

8"x10" oil on canvas board, painted en plein air, alla prima, on May 13th around 10am. Contact me to purchase for $65.

Painting in Northwest Georgia in the Spring and Summer presents particular challanges when dealing with greens. An artist friend describes the foliage here as being "North Georgia Green Green". It takes keen observation to find those hidden 'other' colors in the thick leafy trees.

This scene is actually a gravel road running along the Western edge of Chetoogeta Mountain in Tunnel Hill, GA. I just didn't use any green - of any kind, either mixed or tube color - when painting this quick study. Afterward I did another painting using a 'normal' palette of Spring colors. I'll post it soon.
