My painting set-up --- Lori
Here is what I use to paint with, the easel with a painting on it, a rolling file cabinet from Staples or you can get them other places too, they hold everything. Lunch, water, paint, panels, bug spray etc. My sketch box sits on top, it holds 3 12 x 16 panels. I have a little box in the front on the ground, that is for sitting in the car if its stormy, it holds paints, rag and a knife. The palette sits on top of the paint storage area and the panel leans on the back. Its made from a cigar box. I also carry a few cardboard cartons with strips of cardboard inside on the sides, they hold 8 x 10 and 5 x 7 wet or dry panels.

Roseate Spoonbills by Jenna Star
Two roseate spoonbills graze along a mangrove bayou on the west coast of Florida. I have only seen spoonbills twice in the three years I've been here. They are becoming more and more uncommon. When I heard there were some nearby, I rode my bicycle there and took some photos. I painted the bayou en plein air, and added the spoonbills later from my photo.

Colors at the Crossing by BJ Wright ---- SOLD
8" x 10" oil on stretched canvas - painted en plein air (with a few tweaks in the studio but within the definition of plein air) - $120 including shipping - SOLD, THANK YOU !!
Painting structures in the studio with the help of a T-square, plotted vanishing points, etc usually doesn't pose a problem. However, I'm trying to stretch my painting abilities by painting these structures free hand and en plein air - winging it.
This painting features the historic buildings around the Tunnel Hill, GA, railroad crossing (hidden to the left). On the left in the forefront is the Tunnel Hill Historical Center. Then behind it (L to R) are the Tunnel Hill Church of Christ and the depot (made famous during the Great Locomotive Chase during the Civil War). The orange building was originally Griffin's Sundries - Toppie made the best hamburgers in the state and was always there with her Southern lady charm. The red building was the Tunnel Hill Baptist Mission, but in later years housed Playhouse 64 and featured well known country singers in concert. The two buildings to the right are small factories.
You might not have noticed, but I left out power lines which are such a distraction to the charm of this beautiful spot in NW Georgia. I love it here!

Queen Anne's Lacey Meadow by BJ Wright - SOLD
10" x 8" oil on canvas covered hardboard - painted en plein air, alla prima - $85 including shipping - SOLD - thanks LS Manis !! -
Wednesday morning was hazy and overcast; the sun just wasn't showing through the clouds. I chose to paint this clump of trees at the meadow's edge. There just wasn't anything special about the scene and I was becoming disappointed at the outcome. But just as I was completing the foreground, the sun peeked through and the Queen Anne's lace seemed to spring up shouting "Look at us!". I smiled and instantly knew the title of this little painting.

DAILY PAINTING 300!!!! Whew! Five Sisters on the Indian River Plein Air
The view today in front of my yard. Its 11 x 14 all knife painted. It was very hot today, I painted in watered down clothes so I didn't over heat. A nice lady from the Palm Beach Post, Ms. Marshall, interviewed me today about living on the river here and my paintings. The article should be in the August 11th newspaper, I'll tell all about it if it makes it in there. I hope I didn't sound like too much of an idiot, I was so nervous I just blabbered away! hehehe! Four Trees, Pastel by Jenna Star
Four Trees by Jenna Star
This is a pastel I did near Lake Tarpon. Most of it was done in plein air, but it got so hot and humid I finished it later in my studio. It is getting very uncomfortable out now -- well it is July in west Florida after all! Always trying to find places that have a sea breeze and shade......

Early Prayers, Alla Prima, Daily Painting
"Early Prayers"

Acrylic on canvas board
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on canvas board
Got up extra early to beat the heat. I like to get up before everyone, and have time to myself to pray, paint something, or read. What a beautiful sunrise! I really did not do it justice. However, I do like the vines growing on the palms. I painted this one alla prima, from my back deck.

Early Before the Rain by BJ Wright
10" x 8" oil on canvas covered hardboard - painted en plein air, alla prima - $85 including shipping -
I parked at the little covered bridge in Tunnel Hill. I was unloading my painting equipment just before 7 am, searching for a colorful dawn sky. The clouds were moving fast and I saw the pinks appearing as I had hoped. Getting the sky onto canvas was my first thought. I could do the meadow and trees afterward. As the sun peeked from behind the clouds, I was seeing orange, violet, reds - wonderful colors in the trees and underbrush.
The sun suddenly spotlighted the tree on the left with all its crooked limbs and beautiful bark. Just as I finished painting and packing away, the first rain drops fell. It was truly a beautiful morning in Tunnel Hill, GA.

Red Clay Council House study by BJ Wright
11" x 14" oil on stretched canvas - painted en plein air -
This is a study of the Cherokee council house located at Red Clay Park in Cleveland, TN. The day was overcast with very brief moments of sun. The colors appeared to be muted and all the greens seemed to run together. I painted what I saw, but from the start I could see that the lighting left a lot to be desired. I do intent to return later, possibly taking this study. I was intrigued by the large tree on the left which appears to be pointing towards the council house. There is an annual powwow held at the park on the first weekend in August - this year being on the 4th and 5th. Everyone is welcome.

Slow Summer Stream - Sandra Babb
8" x 10" oil on linen board - painted en plein air, alla prima -
Sandra painted this scene in Griffin Park in Tunnel Hill, GA, on June 12th - the same day I painted "Creekside Red" (posted on 6-25-07). We set up our easels several yards apart and painted until the heat and bugs got us. If you'll look at both posts, you'll see the same scene being interpreted differently by each of us. Sandra says that this is a study, but if you'd like to buy it, you can contact her at sandra@babb.com. The price is $45 including shipping.

Boyd's Sunflowers ACEO by Shanti Marie
I painted four different paintings today at Boyd's farm. They are of his Sunflowers and the fields sourrounding his home. This little card I did as a warm up. I was suffering from sensory overload. If anyone wants sunflower pictures let me know I took 86 photos. The Color, The Bees, The birds, The Frogs? Yes frogs, there was a pond near me and they kept talking or croking all day long. Wonderful experience I may go back next week when the seeds are actually in the sunflowers so I can get some pics of birds.
Back at the Pond by BJ Wright
8" x 10" oil on canvas covered hardboard - painted en plein air, alla prima - $85 including shipping -
Sandra drove her red Jeep down the old dirt road to the back pastures of her farm. The cows watched curiously as we set up our easels. It was early and we were trying to miss the July heat. Being overcast, the day blessed us with cool breezes and shade from the old trees. The little pond was covered with scum which was a wonderful shade of blue/breen - almost impossible to match with paint pigments.

Flavors of the South by BJ Wright
12" x 9" oil on stretched canvas - painted en plein air, alla prima - $108 including shipping -
While mixing the paints for this one, I was musing about the delicious colors of this early morning scene. The sunlight hitting the second story porch was a wonderful orange sherbet or
peach iced tea. The deep red shadow side was raspberry jam or perhaps plum butter. The darkest shadows were licorice and the new grass was limeade. Mint julep anyone??

Daily Painting 279 Rain Clouds over the Indian River Plein Air Alla Prima
Rising Water, Impressionism Landscape, Daily Painting
This is closer to the lock at Nubbin's Slough. It has rained hard everyday now for the past three days. The water is a little higher now. Part of the shore is under water. It was very windy today, so I didn't stay long. I did this one alla prima, and with lots of thick paint. What fun it was!
This will probably be my last one for a while, at least of the Nubbin's Slough area. I want to wait and see the difference when the water comes back up.
