ASTER by Shanti Marie

Aster

I loaded up my stuff and headed off to the Hospital. I'm not sure if you will think this is plien aire but it was painted from life and on location. 4.5 by 4.5 watercolor on paper $40.00

Chetoogeta Hillside by BJ Wright

8" x 10" oil on canvas covered hardboard - painted en plein air - $85 including shipping - SOLD - Thanks, Dr. Tom !! -
This scene was painted in 3 stages. Beginning in April the general layout was done; then twice the site was revisited with additions and corrections made to include the seasonal changes. The final touches were done in studio on August 20th.

There are actually two tunnels through Chetoogeta Mountain. The one on the right is famous for being part of the Great Locomotive Chase during the Civil War, and is now part of the historical park in Tunnel Hill. The tunnel to the left was opened in 1928 to accommodate the larger locomotive engines of modern times.

Wisdom Oak by BJ Wright

10" x 8" oil painted en plein air on canvas covered hardboard - $85 -
The old oak has seen possibly a century of modern development around town, but its feet are still firmly planted in the N Georgia clay. It has become a landmark for those who love the simple pleasures of the earth.

Low Profile, historical plein air painting by Fawn McNeill

"Low Profile"
9 x 12 inches
Acrylic on canvas-hardboard

I had a great morning! 75 degrees and a nice breeze . . . It hasn't been that nice is a long time. I stayed a couple of hours and had all kinds of interesting people stop and visit! One man had a bird on his shoulder that laughed just like a person! My husband even came and brought me breakfast. Can't beat that!

PS. All of this grass, even the closet grass used to be under water, so the lake has still not come up much at all.

painting en plein air in Summer heat

Painting en plein air in August in 95+ degree heat is a challenge. I started out early on Monday, the 13th, and parked beside the covered bridge in Tunnel Hill. The little creek was murmuring its way south, and I was pleased that there were enough trees to give shade for a few hours. The painting of the old oak still needs a few tweeks here and there and will be posted soon. When I'm out painting, I'm thinking of those other plein air painters who love the challenge of capturing nature on canvas or paper.

To quote Tiny Tim, "God bless us, everyone!"

Plein Air Painter Dressed in Pink by BJ Wright

Ode to a Plein Air Painter

Oh, plein air painter dressed in pink,
Are you as crazy as we think??

Outside painting in August heat…
Wouldn’t some iced tea be neat?

Or come inside instead
Of being outside…frying your head.

We know your hat keeps off the sun,
But isn’t your brain just about done?

So come inside and take a rest
Before someone must do compressions…
Upon your chest.

The plein air painter says with a smile,
“No thanks, I’ll stay outside for awhile.

“I’ll mix my paints…yellow, blue and red.
And, no, I’m not touched in the head.

“Nature’s palette sings to me –
To be outside is to be free…

“Free to paint to my heart’s content…
Not inside where I feel pent.

“I’ll come inside when I feel the pain…
Or if it should begin to rain.”

Now mark these words for they are true…
Only plein air painters understand you.

"Big Lake?"
(click on th image to enlarge)
9 x12 inches
Acrylic on Gessobord

I painted this a few months ago, after the drought had set in. They were mowing the lake that day! where there once was knee deep water there were tractors and bush hogs! It was the oddest thing . . .

Chetoogeta Hillside by BJ Wright

8" x 10" oil on canvas covered hardboard - being painted en plein air - $85 including shipping when completed - SOLD thanks Dr. Tom.

This painting was started on April 27th (see April 29th post) but has been sitting in my studio. Several days ago I returned to the hillside and worked some more. Keep in mind that April and August have widely differing weather, lighting, vegetation, etc. It still isn't completed so I will return to the site once more to complete this painting. It seems to be an imaginary landscape - but it's just a combination of different times. Contact me at beejw@charter.net.

Country Store

" Country Store" by Jenna Star. This store is one of the many restored old Florida buildings that are a part of Heritage Village in Largo. I've spent a lot of time painting there. I painted this on site a few months back, but was never happy with the sitting figure. I put the painting away for a while and recently got it out and touched up the man again. I like it now.

"Country Store" 9x12", Oil

$250.00.

As It Flows by BJ Wright

10" x 8" oil on canvas covered hardboard - painted en plein air - $85 including shipping -
This painting was originally painted on 4-25-07 but I just wasn't quite satisfied with the results.
---please click on image for an enlarged view---

Painted on an overcast day, it just didn't have that contrast - that 'ump' that makes a statement. I revisited the scene in Tunnel Hill on Saturday, painting in hand, and captured the August sunlight filtering through the foliage and into the underbrush. There was an amazing amount of purple - so I painted it, too. Contact me at beej@charter.net

Looking back at BJ and Sandra's paintings one August morn.

Phyllis had sent some words of wisdom concerning giving titles to paintings. The titles may cause fond memories and actually help to make a sale. The last two paintings could have been called "Looking East" and "Looking West" because BJ and I were looking in opposite directions and painted hot and cold. We were standing about 6 feet apart and I'm looking into the sun coming over the ridge and she the is looking toward the distant Lookout Mountain that hasn't received that brillant sun yet. If we display these in the same show we should work something out with the names and descriptions. Tonight at BJ's Ringgold Depot Show I think she found out that people like reading the descriptions of the paintings...locations, time, inspiration etc. I think the reason I usually name the place is so I can locate the painting myself because I do so many fields, trees, and distant vistas.

Crepe Myrtle, Floral, Daily Painting by Fawn McNeill

Crepe Myrtle Study
9 x 12 inches
Watercolor

Went out at sunset and rushed through this splash of color! I have wanted to paint these for quite sometime, but they are on the side of the house that rarely gets sun. So I had to do them quickly. I like the shadows on the house, and the loose painterly quality.

Hot Day's Morn--August 8,2007

BJ and Sandra got out "in the field" early this morning and painted for about 1 1/2 hour and were ready to call it a day---a hot day. My goal was to capture the sky as the sun came up still searing from the day before.

Which Way to Lookout Mountain? by BJ Wright

8" x 10" oil on canvas covered hardboard - painted en plein air -
Sandra and I set up our easels in a cow pasture - complete with cows - in the August morning heat. Trying to catch the shadows before they disappeared was quite a challenge. This will be a study used for a larger painting. I'm not really happy with the tree on the right. He'll probably be cut out - not cut down - for the final painting. Too many trees are being cut down in the name of progress. 'Nuff said.

Palm by the Bay by Jenna Star

Palm by the Bay by Jenna Star

I painted this view in Phillipe Park, looking south across Tampa Bay. It was a really hot day. I found a spot of shade and breeze, set up my gear, and got into the zone. I am inspired by nature and that is where I find peace.

A Pink Surprise...Hibiscus Painting

'A Pink Surprise' 5x7 pastel
I finally had a chance to paint plein air today!! I went over to Jayne's house and we painted in her neighbor Bessie's garden. She has a wonderful garden filled with plenty to paint. It was a challenge to focus in on something though! I found this pretty pink Hibiscus flower for my first painting. I am starting on a new challenge to paint 500 outside paintings. This is number one.

This lovely patch of Sweet Williams grows beside Sandra's house. The tree trunks were still wet from an earlier rain so they were showing dark. An altogether lovely morning was spent with Sandra and her dog Ellie.

Lori with "Waiting" at the Treasure Coast Art Gallery in Fort Pierce, Florida

There I am at the Treasure Coast Art Gallery in Fort Pierce with one of my paintings. Its the Indian River by Jungle Trail in Wabasso. Its part plein air and part studio, I did the painting outside by Jungle Trail and then I didn't like the modern boat so I took it out when I got home and put the old boat in. If you are in Fort Pierce, stop in and see the show, it will be up for a month. Its at avenue A right by the railroad tracks.

which red??

Looks like Cad Red was the favorite red chosen by the vast majority of those who voted in the recent poll. Suggestion - wouldn't you like to try another red as your 'favorite' for one week?? Might be fun and might result in nice surprises.

Singing the Blues Again, floral by Fawn McNeill

"Singing the Blues Again"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on hardboard

Went out in my yard yesterday morning and painted these plumbago plants again. I set up on the opposite side so I could include the trees, and more sunlight. The down fall was that it was much hotter for me as well.

The photo has a slight glare on the cabbage palm, after three tries I decided to go ahead and post it as is -- sorry about that.

Auburntown (wc 7x9.5) $60

This is in Auburntown TN. Not much going on there these days but plenty of subject matter. My battery went kaput there and a nice lady and her daughter helped my get it jump started with their truck. I was not setting in the middle of the street, I just moved the road over. ;-) This is also from my Aquabee Deluxe Sketchbook.
