Nubbin's Gator, Daily Painting

Nubbin's Gator
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on canvas board

I really struggled with the rocks: didn't want them to be the focus of the painting, but they were a strong visual for adding depth. I think they turned out alright. The gator is one of the largest I have seen, he cought a few things and went on shore, wow, am I glad for the rocks!

Pigeon Mountain Lake by BJ Wright

8" x 10" oil on canvas covered hardboard - painted en plein air, alla prima - $85 including shipping - SOLD, Thanks Vincent !
On Wednesday, Sandra and I thought we had gotten an early start to miss the heat as we drove through Chickamauga and toward Pigeon Mountain. We were wrong. After finally finding a spot wide enough to pull off the dirt road, not get into the poison oak and not fall off the mountain - we set up our easels. About the time we uncovered our palettes, there came a dump truck "high-ballin' it" followed by a cloud of dust. Then about every 5 minutes another truck came by, then another, then another. It is interesting to note that each time a truck went by, they were driving slower and slower. We think that maybe they were on their radios telling each other, "Hey guys, there's a couple of crazy ladies on the side of the road trying to paint in this heat. Let's give 'em a break." Afterwards we had a nice lunch in Chickamauga and planned another outing soon. Plein air painting - you gotta love it!

Morning's Catch

"Morning's Catch"
8x10 inches
(ready to frame)
Acrylic on canvas board

This is off to the right at the Nubbin's Slough lock. This is the second of four I have done from this area. The herons and egrets were catching all kinds of fish! Before the drought, the water used to come up and splash on the rocks in the foreground . . .

This little shack sits on the edge of the meadow where the annual Civil War reenactment is held in Tunnel Hill, GA. It's used mostly for storage now, but it comes alive during the battle with horses tied to the hitching rail and Yankee soldiers on the porch awaiting orders.

Nickel Crypt (oil 8/10) $90

This was painted 9 years ago. I remember it was a cold day and a little windy so I finished it at home. As plein air goes, I am not hard core. Mt Olivet Cemetery in Nashville is a pretty cool place as graveyards go. Lot's of interesting monuments and sculpture. One guy's tomb looks like Napoleon's. Another is all done up like a Greek temple. The old Nashville City Cemetery is interesting as well. I have done a few pencil sketches there.

The landing

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Living by Beautiful Lake Wylie SC I see lots of Water. The landing isn't too far from our home and sometimes I go down there. There is a general Buzz in the air with resturants and piers, fishermen and lots of blue sky and blue water. "Its all good" as they say.

Nubbin's Morning Historic painting by Fawn McNeill

"Nubbin' s Morning"
Historic drought of 2007-2008
8x10 inches
Acrylic on canvas board

Got to go out to Nubbin's Slough again early this morning, it is one of those places I could go to every day and find something new and interesting to paint. I just have to make myself get out of bed early-- before it is so unbelievably hot! Lake Okeechobee is inland and this area doesn't have the ocean breeze to keep things cool, we get the muggy thick air. But the mornings are pleasant before 9:00.

I did this painting alla prima (all at once), before 7:45! I started it with a warm sienna- brown tone all over the canvas board (canvas mounted on hard board). I toned it last night, so it was dry. I tried to let some of those warm browns show through as I paintied everything in. Acrylics dry quickly, so I keep a mister bottle of water handy, and use thick amounts of paint when I want that wet- in- wet look. It was fun to try a new approach. I learn something new everytime I go out. you can click on the image to see a close up of the warmth showing through the clouds.

Creekside Red by BJ Wright - SOLD

10" x 8" oil on stretched canvas - painted en plein air, alla prima - $90 including shipping - this painting has SOLD - thank you, Leisa !

This little creek is in Harry Griffin Park in Tunnel Hill, GA. Painting that day was a chore because of the heat and fatigue - we had been painting for several hours. I've been trying to practice "paint what you see, not what you think you see". The water flow in the little creek is low due to the drought, so the dark vegetation shows through the crystal clear water, almost making the water disappear. As I was finishing the last strokes, I noticed a red object in the lower right. I painted it, too, not thinking what it might be. Then I began noticing red in the shadows to the left. I painted it also. Walking into the water, I found the red object on the right (a Coke can) and realized that the can's color had drawn my eye to the otherwise unrelated reds in the shadows. Painting shapes and colors helps me realize the characteristics of the objects they become.

Nubbin's Slough,Lake Okeechobee, Daily Painting

"Nubbin's Slough"
8 x 10 inches
Acrylic on canvas board

Went out very early this morning, before it got too hot! It was a beautiful morning: birds everywhere, bright sunshine, and a cool breeze. Can't beat that! All of the land showing is usually under water, this drought has been more severe than ever in recorded history.

Summer Soltice

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I have been a little under the weather lately and haven't really been out much this week. I decided to sit in my garden and look across thru the flowers and paint/ sketch a bug's eye view of my yard. This is a watercolor 7" by 8" on paper.

Thanks for the invitation to join this group and will try to get out at least once a week to paint something to post. Hopefully something a bit more scenic.

Back at the Ranch

Back at the Ranch

Oil on Canvas, 9x12

$200

I painted this one mostly on location at a friend's ranch in Florida. The air was very heavy and sticky and we were hoping for rain after a long dry period here. Thunder and lightening came along and I packed up, but no significant rainfall came that day. I finished this in the studio later.

Plein Air Painting at Red Cliffs Lodge

I thought I'd share some photos of my plein air set up from my recent trip to the Southwest. If anyone is looking to splurge on a fantastic place to paint in Moab, Utah...I highly recommend the Red Cliffs Lodge. The accomodations were wonderful, the staff so friendly and the setting was breathtaking! As you can see from the top photo, the view from the patio was amazing! There is a table and chairs and a lounger on the patio...so it was easy to set up my supplies and stay in the shade. And the dip in the pool and hot tub after painting was a nice finishing touch. And did I mention the delicious brunch and the onsite winery????????

On June 12th, Sandra, Cathy and I met to paint at a nearby park which is the location of the annual Battle of Tunnel Hill, a Civil War reenactment. It was still early, but we knew we must capture the light and shadow before it got too hot. I did 2 more paintings that day and will post them soon. I had done another painting at this same site on April 30th (posted on May 5th) and the difference in the foliage is amazing. If I painted this same scene every day of the year, I wouldn't be tired of it.

I live next to a small ranch. I set up outside my house yesterday morning. I looked across the fence at this neat little opening in the moss laden cypress trees. The Spanish moss used to look spooky to me, but now I like the way it drapes over things.

Barn and Graveyard (watercolor 6/4) *SOLD*

I painted this from my pencil sketch and memory. One grave said 1887 and the others were too worn to read. These old graveyards are deteriorating fast as well as the old barns. The old barns are helped in their passing by bulldozers! When these farms are passed down to the heirs, they usually get sold because folks cannot afford the inheritance taxes owed to THE MAN. ;-P

Daily Painting 263 Royal Poinciana at Heathcote Botanical Gardens plein air alla prima

Peaceful Morn at the Battlefield-Tunnel Hill , GA

Cathy Cooksey- This is the view over the battlefield at Tunnel Hill , Ga. in early morning. It's hard to imagine the brutality that occurred here during the Civil War. It is so peaceful here in the mornings, however there is definetly a presence here. You can feel it.

This was my first attempt at Plein Aire. I had experience painting outside, because I paint outside at my shows, but this was the first time I was painting what I was looking at around me. It was amazing how much I learned from this one picture. I'm Hooked. I can't wait to do it again. We painted in morning and at noon. I definitly preferred the morning.
This is a 10 x 14 acrylic and it sells for $100. To purchase contact me at cookseycathy@aol.com

Memories in the Weeds

Cathy Cooksey

This is the type of work I normally do. I am a self-taught artist and I have not been able to find an instructor to help me improve on what I already know. They want me to start all over again. I do this for an income and I certainly don't want to mess up what I already can do.

I think Plein Aire may be a way for me to learn more without doing damage to my own technique.

I had my first try at it a few days ago . See the post dated June 12th. It was fun.

I will try to post it tommorrow.

I drove to the store the other evening at dusk with the moon out and the business lights just coming on. The cows were doing their thing. I locked the scene in my memory and painted it before I went to bed. I always like the light at this time of day. (Painted 1/7/07)
